On Thursday, May 21st, HiTel FCU employees participated in the Red Nose Day. It was a worldwide fundraising campaign for people to have fun and raise money for children and young people living in poverty. Red Nose Day is the main way in which Comic Relief raises money. Comic Relief is an operating British charity, which was founded in 1985 by the comedy script writer Richard Curtis and comedian Lenny Henry. The United Kingdom held their first Red Nose Day on February 5, 1988. However, this was the very first year that the United States participated in the cause. Fifty percent of funds raised by the U.S. will remain in country and be shared among nonprofit organizations and the remaining funds will be distributed among other nonprofit organizations around the world (Africa, Asia and Latin America). HiTel FCU is always active in the community, lending a helping hand to many different organizations. For the past decade, the credit union has put on a company bake sale in efforts to raise money for Aloha United Way.
This year there were many generous donors – fried rice omelet, brownies, strawberry cookies, maple bacon cupcakes and much more scrumptious goodies. Employees got their fill and it was a great success.
In addition, in the past few years, HiTel FCU added a company garage sale to their fundraising efforts. This year employees brought in a number of donations from ceramic pottery and baby toys to various make up products and home appliances. All proceeds from both events will go to AUW, and the credit union is donating over $10,500!
