Blackjack Tournament

Las Vegas with its bright lights, endless card games, enticing slot machines, extravagant buffets, and amazing acrobatics have us islanders in a gripping obsession.  At any given time almost every one who lives on our islands knows someone who is planning, going, or coming back from a trip to Vegas.  It is because of this enthrallment we have with the “ninth” island that we plan a trip to Las Vegas every year for our members.

This year’s trip will happen from November 2 through November 6.  We will be staying downtown (of course) at the California hotel.  Members who booked their trip under our special rate of $699 plus tax with Vacations Hawaii will join the HiTel team for a Vegas adventure packed with events.  We’ve planned a tailgate party, slot tournament, all day shopping to the all the best outlets, and much more!

Sound like something you’d like to do?  If you haven’t heard (take a look at page five of July’s newsletter) we gave our members a chance to win a trip for two for this awesome trip!  On Saturday, October 6, 2012, 25 lucky finalists who entered our sweepstakes faced-off at our annual Blackjack Tournament!

The Blackjack Tournament was held at the Clear Channel VIP Music Hall, a cozy venue with sleek leather couches, a modern bar (where we served non-alcoholic beverages and super satisfying Zippy’s fried noodles, fried chicken, chili, and more), and a small stage set up with our blackjack table.  The Morning Crew from Island 98.5 (Gregg Hammer, Rory Wild and KreyZ Oshiro) were keeping the crowd entertained with their hilarious jokes and card commentary.  You could tell the Vegas old-timers apart from the fresh-faced newbies looking to test their blackjack skills for the first time.  All the participants were cheering for one another and giving the players on the stage hints of whether to “HIT!” or to “STAY!”

The finalists were signed-up into several rounds of 5-6 people.  The players in each round played until two players collected three chips.  These two players advanced on to the finals!  The players who did not get three chips had their names entered in a raffle drawing for a surprise prize!.

Once all the first round players were finished, we went on to the Finals.  In the final rounds, the first person to in each round to collect three chips won the free trip to Vegas!!

BUT- that isn’t it!  As mentioned earlier, all the players from the first rounds who did not advance to the finals had their names put into a raffle to win a surprise prize!  Rory Wild had his niece pull the lucky person to win this prize and the winner was… SETSUKO!  We awarded Setsuko with a trip to join us in Las Vegas too!

Setsuko was so shocked when she won!

Congratulations to our winners: Debra, Robert, Gene, Leith, Nate, Dallas and Setsuko!

One of the best things about Las Vegas is that the city appeals to people of all ages, it doesn’t matter if you’re 21 or 80 Las Vegas has something to offer to EVERYONE… just like Hawaiian Tel Federal Credit Union!

Avoiding Food Poisoning

What do Starbucks, Whole Foods, and Nature Valley have in common?  In the last two months, these three companies had to recall one or more products from their stores because of a possible risk of salmonella.  Samonella and E. Coli are common bacteria that cause food poisoning.  With food constantly being recalled because of these bacteria, it is important for us to learn what food poisoning, salmonella, and e. coli are, and what we can do to prevent contamination.

What is Food Poisoning?

Food poisoning is a common, usually mild, but sometimes deadly illness. Typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea that occur suddenly (within 48 hours) after consuming a contaminated food or drink. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that in the United States, 1 in 6 people becomes sick from eating contaminated food.

Bake Sale

Our bellies GROWL when we think of this year’s Bake Sale. On Tuesday, September 25th, more than 30 people brought their delectable donations to the sale– making this the largest bake sale we’ve ever had! The sale offered dishes like comforting beef stew, tasty
macaroni ratatouille soup, bubbly four-bite pizza, sweet strawberry shortcake, indulgent chocolate peanut butter cup cookies, tangy lemon bars, spicy pickled onion, and SO MUCH MORE! Who knew HiTel FCU housed so many Top Chefs? The bake sale was an absolute success, raising more than $1,300 for Aloha United Way! We think it’s safe to say that the best way to help a great cause is with a full and satisfied stomach! Thank you to everyone who donated food and to those who purchased the yummy five-star fare!
